Every year, around mid-October, I get the same wave of messages: "Are you still booking fall family photos?" And every year I wish I could send this post back in time to September, because by mid-October, the answer is usually "barely."


So here's the honest booking math for fall family photos in the Fredericksburg area, from someone whose calendar lives it annually.


Work backward from the holiday cards

If you want your photos on a holiday card, the timeline looks like this: cards need to be mailed by early December → which means ordering them by late November → which means having your final gallery in hand before that → and my hand-edited galleries are delivered about 2–4 weeks after your session. Translation: a session by late October is the safe zone, and I recommend reaching out before November at the absolute latest. Earlier is calmer for everyone, especially your toddler.


Why fall dates disappear first

Two reasons. First, everyone wants the same six weekends, late September through early November, when Virginia's foliage peaks and the light turns golden. Second, golden-hour outdoor sessions are genuinely limited. Sunset only happens once a day, it gets earlier every week, and weekday evenings stop working for school-age families. I only have so many of those slots each season, and they're the first thing to go.


The studio is the quiet workaround: studio family sessions are weatherproof, meltdown-friendly (climate control and a quick reset beat a cold field, ask any parent of a two-year-old), and they're available at times the golden-hour math can't offer.


The actual booking windows

  • Booking in July–August: full choice of dates, golden-hour slots available, zero stress. This is the move.
  • Booking in September: still good but weekends start thinning out.
  • Booking in October: possible, but you're choosing from what's left, and gallery delivery for cards gets tight.
  • November: reach out anyway, I always do my best, and a studio session can often still beat the card deadline.
