If you've started looking into family photos, you've probably noticed that pricing can feel like a bit of a mystery. Some photographers list their prices, many don't, and "starting at" can mean almost anything. As a family photographer here in Fredericksburg, I'd rather just talk about it openly because I know you're not really asking "what does a session cost." You're asking "what will this cost my family, and what do we actually get?" So here's the honest answer.
The short version
In the Fredericksburg area, most professional family photo sessions fall somewhere between $200 and $800+, depending on what's included. On the lower end, you'll find short mini sessions with a handful of digital images. On the higher end, you'll find longer custom sessions with full galleries, professional retouching of every image, and sometimes printed artwork. Photographers closer to Northern Virginia and DC often charge $1,500 or more for the same kind of session.
At my studio, family sessions are $450 to $650, and I'll break down exactly what that includes below because the "what's included" part is where pricing really starts to make sense.
What actually determines the price
When you're comparing photographers, these are the things that move the number:
How many images you receive. This is the biggest one. Some sessions include 5 images; some include the whole gallery. A $250 session with 5 images and a $500 session with 30 images can be the same price per photo but a very different experience on your wall.
Editing. There's a real difference between batch-edited photos and images that have been individually hand-edited. Every image I deliver is hand-edited it's slower, and it's also why the final gallery looks the way it does.
Session length. Twenty minutes is enough for a few smiling-at-the-camera shots. A full hour is enough for the in-between moments, the giggles, the snuggles, the kids actually warming up. (If you have a toddler, you know the warming up part is not optional Haha.)
Studio or outdoor. Studio sessions are consistent and weatherproof. Outdoor golden-hour sessions are beautiful but limited, I only have so many of those evening slots each season, which is part of why fall books up early.
The experience around the session. Planning help, wardrobe guidance, a real proof gallery to choose from are all better than showing up and hoping for the best. That support is built into how I price, because the families I work with mostly want this to feel easy.
What family sessions cost at H. Thompson Studios
I publish my pricing because I'd want the same courtesy as a mom doing the research:
Signature Family — $450. Up to an hour, in the studio or outdoors during golden hour, immediate family, and 15 hand-edited digital images.
Keepsake Family — $650. The same session, but you receive the full hand-edited gallery — roughly 25 to 35 images.
A $200 retainer and a signed contract hold your date, and that retainer goes toward your package. The remaining balance is simply due by your session day. Every session also includes a planning consultation, styling guidance with access to my client closet, a professionally prepared proof gallery, lifetime printing rights, and access to a professional print lab for prints, canvases, and holiday cards. Additional images beyond your package are $45 each. You can see everything side by side on my pricing page.
When should you book, especially for fall?
Here's the part I wish more families knew: October through December is the busiest season of my year, and golden-hour outdoor slots are the first thing to go. If you want your photos back in time for holiday cards, I recommend reaching out before November, that leaves time for the session, your proof gallery, and the careful editing your final images deserve.
For everything else: most families book about 2–3 months ahead. If your timeline is shorter than that, reach out anyway, I always do my best to make it work.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I expect to spend on family photos in Fredericksburg?
Most families investing in a professional full session locally spend $400–$700 once everything's included. Short minis run less; larger custom or luxury sessions run more. My family packages are $450 and $650, all-in for the session and digital images.
What's included in your family session price?
The session (up to an hour, studio or golden-hour outdoor), planning and styling help, my client closet, a proof gallery to pick favorites from, hand-edited digital images (15 or the full gallery, depending on package), and lifetime printing rights.
Is studio or outdoor better for family photos?
Honestly, both are wonderful, and it depends on your family. Studio sessions are calm, climate-controlled, and timeless (and toddler meltdowns are easier to reset indoors). Outdoor golden-hour sessions have that warm, airy feel. We'll choose together during your planning consultation.
Do you photograph extended family or just immediate family?
My listed packages cover immediate family. If you're hoping to include grandparents or a larger group, just mention it when you reach out and I'll let you know the options.
How far in advance should I book a fall session?
For September–November, 1–2 months ahead is ideal, and earlier if you want a specific golden-hour date. Before November is the safe zone for holiday-card delivery.
Do you offer anything for babies and toddlers specifically?
Yes, milestone sessions for sitting babies, first birthdays, and cake smashes, and newborn sessions for the very newest family members. Many of my families started with one session and have been coming back for each new chapter, which is, truly, my favorite part of this job.
