"I have nothing to wear" is, without exaggeration, the thing I hear most from expecting mamas, usually about four seconds after "I'm so excited." So let's solve it properly, because what you wear shapes how your maternity photos feel, and more importantly, how you feel in them.
Here's the part I want you to hear first: you don't have to buy anything. My studio keeps a client closet stocked with maternity gowns chosen to flatter real pregnant bodies; fitted bodices, flowing skirts, wrap silhouettes, sleeves you can actually move in. When you book a session with me, we go through options together during your planning consultation. You're welcome to bring your own pieces too; some of my favorite portraits ever happened in a mama's own sundress.
What photographs beautifully
Solid colors over busy patterns. Cream, sage, dusty blue, terracotta, deep emerald, rich, timeless tones that won't date your photos in five years. Small busy prints tend to distract from the two things that matter: your face and your bump.
Fabric that moves. Chiffon, tulle, and soft jersey catch light and breeze (especially at golden hour) and add that effortless, romantic feel. Structured or stiff fabrics tend to fight the camera.
Fit at the bump, flow below. The most universally flattering maternity silhouette is fitted through the bust and bump with movement below. Trust me on the fitted part, the bump is the guest of honor.
Things to skip: neon colors, large logos, shapewear that leaves lines, and anything you have to keep adjusting. If you're tugging at it in the dressing room, you'll be tugging at it in every photo.
What about partners and kids?
Simple and coordinated, not matching. If mama's in sage, your partner looks great in cream, soft gray, or earth tones. No logos, no plaids that argue with the gown. For little ones, my closet includes children's outfits (0–4 years), so siblings can be dressed to match the look without a shopping trip.
Timing your session (because the outfit only matters if we catch the window)
The sweet spot for maternity photos is 28–34 weeks, beautifully round, still comfortable enough to move and pose. That means booking in your second trimester is ideal. Sessions at my Fredericksburg studio include full closet access at every package level, and maternity sessions start at $400, everything's listed openly on my pricing page.
Quick answers
Do you really provide the gowns?
Really. The client closet is included with every maternity session, gowns designed to flatter all body types, plus newborn and children's pieces for the rest of the family. Bring your own favorites too; we'll plan your looks together. If I don't have what you're looking for we can discuss options.
How many outfits can I wear?
Up to 3 looks in the Motherhood session and up to 4 in the Signature session. Most mamas do one flowing gown, one fitted look, and one personal piece.
What colors work best in the studio vs. outdoors?
In studio, almost anything works, we control the light and backdrop. For golden-hour outdoor sessions, warm neutrals and soft earth tones glow; jewel tones photograph beautifully against fall fields.
Should I get my hair and makeup done?
If it makes you feel amazing, yes, soft, natural-leaning glam photographs best. Either way, come as the version of yourself you want to remember.
